Saint Francis hosts events during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Cougars HOPE (Healing, Outreach, Prevention, Education) will host a series of events in October to promote Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The month of events reflects USF’s commitment to creating a campus culture that fully reflects its Franciscan values to reverence the unique dignity of each person, serve one another, society and the Church, and foster peace and justice.
The October schedule:
Silent Witness: Oct. 2, 8 a.m. to noon, Allen County Courthouse Lawn. A Silent Witness visual display will be on the courthouse lawn, sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on Domestic Violence, Sexual Harassment and Rape. After the event, some of the silhouettes will be placed around campus for the month of October.
Creating HOPE: Oct. 2, 7 to 8 p.m. Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center. Mudslingers invites you to create small clay bowls or cups and discuss healthy and unhealthy behaviors in relationships.
Tabling Event: Oct. 3, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Pope John Paul II Center lobby. Stop by the Criminologists in Action (CIA) table to learn more about domestic violence and pick up free purple bracelets, ribbon pins and other swag.
Flowers on the River: Oct. 3, 6 to 7 p.m., Wells Street Bridge. Join the YWCA as they launch Domestic Violence Awareness Month by honoring those whose lives have been effected by domestic violence.
Chalk it Up: Oct. 11, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Pint & Slice, 816 Calhoun St. Join the YWCA outside Pint & Slice as they cover sidewalks with facts, statistics, drawings and quotes that bring domestic violence awareness to the community, and encouragement and support to survivors. Stop in at anytime during the event and stay for as long as you’d like!
Tabling and Bake Sale: Oct. 11, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Pope John Paul II Center lobby. Purchase cookies and other treats, provided by CIA. Proceeds will be donated to the YWCA Northeast Indiana Women’s Shelter.
Cuts and Conversations: Oct. 17, 4 to 6 p.m., St. Benedict the Moor Justic Center, Trinity Hall. Saint Francis alumnus Adam Blakey will facilitate a discussion on how to reduce domestic violence while participants receive free haircuts from professional barbers.
Domestic Violence Awareness Panel Discussion: Oct. 17, 6 to 8 p.m., Achatz Hall of Science and John and Toni Murray Research Center, Room 226. Representatives from the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, Fort Wayne Police Department, and YWCA Northeast Indiana will discuss the issue of domestic violence.
Sacred Time: Oct. 18, 11 to 11:30 a.m., St. Francis Chapel. Mass will be offered for the specific intention of an end to domestic violence.
Together We Can Win Against Domestic Violence: Oct. 21, 2 p.m., Bishop D’Arcy Stadium. The women’s soccer team will play Marian University and both teams will pair their traditional school colors with purple in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Fans are encourage to wear purple.
How One Question Can Save a Life: Domestic Violence and Healthcare Workers: Oct. 24, 9 to 10:30 a.m., Doermer Family Center for Health Science Education
Self-Defense Class: Oct. 25, 6 to 8 p.m., Pope John Paul II Center, Room 112. CIA invites people to a self-defense workshop provided by a martial artist from White Tiger Martial Arts.
Tie-Dye T-shirts: TBD, St. Francis Chapel lawn.
