USF President Statement on Travel Ban

February 6, 2017

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — University of Saint Francis President Sister M. Elise Kriss OSF has released the following statement regarding the recent travel ban signed by President Trump.

“As a nation born of refugees, the United States of America has overcome countless obstacles. Our resilience, forged by immigrants and the decedents of immigrants, has created the most powerful country on earth. The recent executive action by President Trump banning travel from select countries runs counter to our university’s desire to continue to welcome and support students from around the globe. Surely, we can devise a better way to honor our borders and at the same time treat our fellow humans with respect and understanding.

“The University of Saint Francis’ Franciscan values call upon our community to respect the dignity of each person regardless of their faith, position in society, or other status. Further, our values emphasize the need to foster peace and justice. As a faithful community of learners with values to uphold, we call upon President Trump to reconsider this action as a statement of compassion for the world’s refugees who have suffered greatly, and to welcome them and others who seek a better life within our borders. These immigrants are our future friends and neighbors with whom we can share our free and just society. We pray for a better solution for all.”
